Notes from a student with a migraine from the liberal bias on Campus…
Offered by a Conservative student, Randy Deabay.

It is truly an amazing spectacle to see a paper with a byline of “The University of Maine At Presque Isle’s Student Voice”, when one finds only three opinion pieces from faculty, and staff in the UTimes dated March 27, 2008. With such a fallacy statement, one has to wonder why a student would even attempt to justify another viewpoint. Well, I do merely to point out that a student with as many years of experience, if not more, can and does have another view on life, and this country’s current strife’s.

Seriously, is the UTimes a paper for students, or one for a professor to continually offer his one sided point of view? Can the editor or advisor offer any substantial reasoning for such actions? Let me see, where should I start with my diatribe of the condition of America, the economy, or social inequalities?

Why would anyone want to toast the death of 1 American, let alone the 4000th? This was appalling to read, and truly an insult in the highest sense to all service men and women. Instead of complaining, and whining as so many do every opportunity that they get about the war in Iraq, why were they not part of the military, and offering true leadership. If these complainers feel the leadership is below some standard placed randomly by some liberal thinking person who would rather insult our Country, our military, and our president, than to offer true worthy suggestions of change and action, then offer true leadership, and not constant complaining. It was stated in an opinion piece “hundreds of thousands of people in the United States, France, Spain, and Britain vehemently protested the war.” Do we have true statistics, as the Utimes requires, or is this a number randomly chosen? By the way, the total number of citizens in these countries equals in excess of 547 million. Since hundreds of thousands does not equal millions, one would surmise that less than .18% of the total populations of those countries were against this war. I do not think the argument would hold water, what is your opinion on that argument? Why would anyone believe that protesting in front of the IRS buildings is the correct place to protest this war? I say only one who cannot see the forest for the blades of grass in the meadow in front of the forest.

A liberal stating that money is the reason for this war is stating a fallacy. The majority of supporters of this action are conservative, and there is true statistics that disprove the theory that this action is for money. When one looks into the percentage of money given by individuals, it is found to be that in the year 2000 self-prescribed conservatives gave 25% more in donations than liberals according to The American magazine. The difference is that conservatives want to give where needed, while many liberals believe that government is the best place to decide who needs assistance. Really? When was the last time you discussed Social Security or Medicare with someone who is on it currently. These programs are mismanaged, in debt, and will be insolvent in 20 years. Those statistics do not show the ability of the government to be able to handle money properly. Other liberals believe that everyone should have free healthcare. Interesting concept, but has anyone looked into the military healthcare facilities, or the amount of paperwork it takes? Has anyone actually checked on the amount of time that simple tests, and surgeries take in a state ran health care country? Has anyone chatted with a mate from Britain, who can afford it, and where he or she actually goes to have health care provided? No-liberals again believe that a huge bureaucracy can do a better job than a small community establishment, and it is not proven anywhere that is the case.

While good professors will not be returning to this campus, and the population declines, we have professors using the Utimes for personal battles. Why am I included in a disagreement between two professors who should spend more time teaching than arguing? Where is the true ability of individuals to discern between petty wars, and true intellectual discourse? Sadly, this university is seeing incidents of professors not adhering to their true calling, the teaching of substance to all students without bias, or condescension. I would like to know that I do not have to be concerned about which professor I take for courses, because they either admittedly have shoved their political viewpoint down student’s throats, or will possibly hold my political viewpoints and experience against me, and grade me unfairly in their classes. This, my fellow students should be a concern to all students, not that of two professors discussing the legitimacy of GE in a student newspaper.

Now-here is an opportunity for those who want to say, “See, I told you conservatives do not care.” I am tired of liberals with nothing better to do than to blame the government for the stubbornness and own idiocy by thousands of citizens during Katrina. I knew that Katrina was going to hit New Orleans three days prior to the event. I knew the concerns, and saw the demands by state and city officials for people to leave. What happened? Several thousand decided to stay. Yes, it was a disaster, and sad, and many prayers went out to those caught in the wake of the disaster, but how could it be the fault of the government? When do professors with a severe lean to the left stop spreading blame on government for it taking time to save stubborn people from rooftops? There was one organization on this campus that took over 30 students to New Orleans, and helped. This organization was Campus Crusades, considered more conservative than liberal. Where was this government bashing liberals during this event? Did these liberals take time, money, and physical donation to New Orleans, or did they sit in Northern Maine trying to find someone to blame for the disaster? Spreading hatred and discontent is not helping anyone, but taking inadequacies of one and placing on others undeservedly.

After reading the March 27 issue of the Utimes, I was astounded to have the image of the boy who cried wolf, after reading the opinion pieces. How can one complain about the price of oil, and then equate it to trucking companies not being able to deliver items to stores, and feel good about this? Is it not the liberal hypocrites who complain about the price of oil, but fight every alternative fuel source? Wind power, will kill some birds, atomic power, and may have a nuclear meltdown, solar power, too expensive. We then discuss the gulf coast, or Anwar, definitely not, will cause disaster in wildlife areas. Stop complaining, and using scare tactics, while complaining about being in Iraq. Has anyone actually seen the hypocrisy in the whining about oil prices of those who say that Iraq is all about money?

It is time that liberal thinkers stop talking and start looking into the reality of life, and the world. Sometimes, it behooves those who profess, to stop, and actually experience reality. Is this the fate of America, destruction in the name of taxes, liberal thinking and singing kum ba yah?

What this nation needs…

Our nation is on a brink. This brink is to be great once again, or to fall like the empires that built the annuals of history. Our nation does not need spectacular new ideas, nor world wind governmental change, but something so much simpler, so much easier.

This nation needs no division, but understanding, not deceit, but caring, not judgment, but understanding, and not hatred, but a renewed love of our neighbor. Today, we need to stand up for what we believe in, and we need to believe in what has built America. Today, the historical significance of each battle, each drop of blood, and sweat dropped to build this nation is at a crossroad, and only we, the citizens can save it from a future of unknown divisions.

Our country, built on the ideal of opportunity, an ideal of working together to create the most significant country of known history, and we have the amazing opportunity to carry this forward. Today, we need to remember Bobby Kennedy’s words, and come together to make America great once again. Today we need to rid our divisions, and come together for our country, and to honor John F. Kennedy’s words of “Do not ask what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.”

Today is monumental, today is the brink of greatness, or disaster, and the path that we, this nation take shall affect our future beyond imagination. Today we need to begin to mend fences, cross aisles, understand our neighbors, appreciate our opportunities, and come together once again, so we may take our country to new and great heights. No more division, no more sadness, just the opportunity to come together to make the change this country so desperately needs.

Today we need to honor those who fought to make our country great, from the revolutionaries, to the civil war heroes, to our presidents in time of great threats, to our imagination that has taken our scientific community to heights not long ago believed impossible. Today, we can choose to be great, or just average. Today is a door that we can open to acceptance and cohesiveness. The choice lies in our hands, what shall we do?

This is a short writing that I just wrote for my Aunt who has just passed away. As family members morn, there is the opportunity to celebrate in the love and caring one teaches us through their life, and Ellen did this so many times. I hope you feel the love that she has shown so many in the words written.

Our Precious Ellen, a rose lying with all of her beauty surrounding all of her loved ones. This is a time to celebrate the love, kindness, and caring that Ellen so lovingly shared throughout her life, as a Mom, a wife, a sister, a daughter, and a grandmother.

As our moments of silence give way to a tear of sadness, let us not forget those loving hands holding us near, and her loving eyes telling us that everything shall be ok. Today we celebrate the going home to our father for our loved Ellen, and in this time of our sadness, let us remember that there is no more pain, no more sadness, and no more hurt as our precious Ellen reaches the door to her new home.

Ellen, an angel sent to us from heaven was a teacher, a confidant, a disciplinarian, and a protector. Our love for her is only dwarfed by the love that our father in heaven has for her, and in his graces, shall that same love given to all her loved ones, once again be felt, and given, to Ellen, as she spends her journey in God’s gardens.

In our moment of sadness, let us not forget the love shared by Ellen throughout the years, and the strength through struggles that gave her perseverance. With every battle won, came such a trophy of love to those most dear to Ellen, and in this moment of our grief, let us never forget her smiling, glowing face looking with love upon each of us.

Today, let us celebrate the angel we have known, Ellen in her journey to the gates of heaven, and let us pray for the open arms of god’s love to take her in, and shower her with the love and kindness she has shown us for all these years.

While I have allowed myself to be turned into something other than I am, there has been a part of the real, true me crying to get out. I have allowed myself to be coerced to act and react in ways that are not me. I have allowed myself to forget the significant part of me that has been extremely important to me. Today is the day that this will change, and that I declare that I can no longer allow others to determine me.

In life, we choose our lot by the reactions, and actions that affect our being, our own little sphere in this large world. At times, we even forget the true inner person that we once were. That is something that will only undermine the ability of one to be honest to him.

I have helped people to find their dreams, to believe in themselves, and to have the strength to be strong. Today, I react to my surroundings, with no foresight to see the obvious until it has over taken me. Today, that changes. Today, I will take myself back. Today, I will no longer allow others to determine my attitude, my ability, or my desire to live and succeed.

Today, I become me ONCE AGAIN

A smile on my face, positive in my heart, and the ability to help my friends, neighbors, and strangers alike to see goodness in everything around them. Today will be my day to create the foundation for my tomorrows. Join me in taking the first step in each of our lives to become ourselves once again. Today, shed off the fallacy that others have created for us, dress in our own ability to live, love, and share. Today, I will depend on no one, except that of my God, and today, no one will have me feel the need to defend who I am…Today I am whole again!!!

Through life’s journey, we have the opportunity to meet many interesting people. One is appalled by how some go about trying to defend their defenseless acts. Some people spend their time just denying what was witnessed, while others try to deflect the vision from their corner of their world to others. The most amazing is the one who attacks because they disagree, and instead of using respectful dialogue, they use defamation, and outlandish demands that are not only fool hearted, but also beyond reason. What should one think of an individual who would stoop to such depths as those who have developed this practice? How should society as a whole feel about this exercise in harassment, and what should society do to such perpetrators?

“The function of education is teaching us to think intensively and critically. But education that stops at that point may prove a great menace to society. The most dangerous criminal may be the man gifted with reason but deprived of morality.”     — Martin Luther King. This saying comes to mind as I think about members of the professorship field. One can be well educated, while losing all morality, or sense of fair play. To this date, one such professor has stood out in this area, and has proven beyond a reasonable doubt that he can no longer be a substantive asset to students, or his profession.

“The price of seeking to force our beliefs on others is that someday they might force their beliefs on us.”     — Mario Cuomo. Mario Cuomo stated exactly the words one should find not only significant, but also true in nature, and substance. As one ventures to pass on a wealth of knowledge, it is easy to fall into a trap of forcing one’s beliefs and prejudices on the heads of so many others.

Ducharme’s Axiom “If you view your problem closely enough you will recognize yourself as part of the problem.” This axiom is a truism that many should not take lightly as they look around, and find fault with those who are not of the same mindset as themselves. The true problem is the inability to recognize a substantive ability of others to have a cognitive and intellectual ideal, which may be contrary to one’s own beliefs.

While I have offered great wisdom by historical figures, one can be self assured that the ideal of a mirror being the true reflection of one’s inner core is as appropriate as any stated within the lines of this writing. I find it a fallacy for some to use the excuse of freedom of speech to go against all accepted morals and ethics, and attack substantially the character of one that would not subscribe to another’s ideals. On which plain of life have we as a society decided to plant our vegetation for future generations? Shall our great advancement in the historical anthems of life be that of destroying one’s own individuality? Will our great admission to history be that of the destruction of one’s ability to voice concern and difference?

While agreement is sweet to one’s ears, complete difference is the foundation of growth, and true understanding. One does not need to be a student of doctorates to understand the significance of the passion one has within their being towards life’s endeavors. The analogs of this generation depends on the ability of the students of philosophical differences to accept, and embrace difference, and to act upon the individuality of people within the confines of society, and not that of one’s power over a part of today’s society.

Whether the ideal is political, religious, or analytical, the ability to bend, and learn are the foundation blocks for greatness. Without a solid foundation, society weeps to a burdensome ending, with an outcome less than favorable for all.

Today was an interesting day for sure. Being Wednesday, January 30, 2008. At 8:15 am, I had to drop my car off to the car dealership. The power steering went on the car on Sunday, and it was becoming a total pain to drive. I am glad that I got it in the shop this week. There was a recall on part of the steering, and since the car is at 35, 518 miles, I was hoping either the warranty or recall would take care of it. Lucky for me, it did. The bottom hose had been a recall, and there was a huge blowout hole in the hose. They fixed it, and god does it drive easy now. My windshield washer pump had quit working as well, so I wanted them to fix it. Well, that was just a simple fuse. Woo Hoo!!!

It was freezing rain this morning, and I had to go to college, “University” and have classes today, and have a study group today. Monday and Wednesday are my busy days, while Tuesday and Thursday are a little easier, but Friday is the breeze day. I had US history 2 at 9 am. I take computer notes in that class. Therefore, since my laptop had a dead battery-I had to plug it in. This class is easy for me, more like a high school review, and not a new information class. This class is from am to 10 am. We usually get out by 9:45. I had free time until 11am-which is my accounting class. This course is intensive work, but easy to do. We took a quiz, and it was for in class practice. I found a mistake that the professor made, and helped two students with problems they had. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, I have a study group that gets together to do the work, and learn from one another.

At 12:00, noon, I had a student outreach committee meeting. I had that until 1pm. The meeting was not much fun today-too many distractions.

At 1 pm, I had my second study group, which is business management study group. We get together on Monday’s and Wednesdays to analyze Harvard cases, and come up with problems and solutions. Today, we started having to do presentations in class. Four people per week. I was number four today. The professor and some students said I did an excellent job. That was nice to hear.

I picked my car up from the dealership around 2pm, and had until 3:30pm for my next class. I got some gas, and cigarettes, and went back to the university and hung out chatting with some classmates. It was interesting. Then I had my business management course.

Jenn and I went to Bonanza for dinner. It was ok, but I got very sick, and have not had a good evening. I guess it is what you would expect if your liver were not working right.

Well, for anyone reading this, occasionally, I will just blog about the day. I will try to keep you up to date with what is happening in my boring life in Northern Maine. This will be all for this time. Hope you did not fall to sleep reading.

My valentine everyday

Kiss from a rose

My sweet valentine

My heart, no longer mine

No gifts of grandeur

For you deserve so much more

My time is all I have

My love all I can share

A hug when you drop a tear

A special look from my eyes

For you will know my true love

For you and all you are

There is no gift money can buy

Nor any reason to really try

To show the love you so deserve

For your heart, my soul has heard

You are my Valentine every day

In every manner and special way

My heart gives my gift of true love

Our meeting planned from above

A gift given to you every day

Could never even start to say

How much you mean to me

I hope it is so very plain to see

You are my true one and only love

All I have is my heart
and a special touch

It may not seem to you like much

But from me these words say it all

You mean so very much to me

Today, tomorrow, and always.

For I truly love you

Indefensible

Why do people try to defend the indefensible? What do people attacking other people personally accomplish? Why do people not take responsibility for their own inaction, or worse their poor actions? Through the years, it has become acceptable to try to repel questions concerning people’s own actions by finding reasons to attack those who question others. Somewhere along the line, people have learned to apply liberally a mean spirit to all conversations that could become constructive and useful. Those actions do nothing but deceive, or worse demean the person doing the personal attacking. The normal reaction of others is to see the inability and lack of common decency to exist in the realm of normal societies.

Today, I witnessed someone personally attacked because they voiced their opinion. This person then was verbally threatened by someone who did not even have enough backbone to show their name, but used the infamous anonymous as their title. How immature and unethical in nature this anonymous person was. If they have the desire to attack, and threaten a person, then do it in full light of day, and with full evidence of all bias that they render.

The question was simple, why does the Student Senate not actually accomplish something this semester, and not just work on internal affairs, while leaving the real needs of students in the cold. Why would anyone be attacked so vehemently for this? The responder showed bias, as well as a hatred for a specific political leaning that portrayed as anger and hatred. This truly was not what the blackboard of the UMPI campus was created.

If the Senate cannot get its house in order, and create actual evidence showing results, then all students who pay in excess of $170,000 annually have the right to question and also demand results or the dismissal of those who are do nothing leaders of this governing organization.

When the senate has evidence that there were miss-appropriations of student activity fees by an organization, then they have the responsibility to take action immediately, and keep the students informed of progress, and not to sweep the issue under the rug. It is up to the president of the senate to lead the group, and to create an atmosphere of cooperation and transparency, not avoidance, and closed doors.

Time has come for people to fess up to their own discretions and incompetence’s, while creating an atmosphere of true cooperation with others.

In the piece of the world

That we so lovingly call home

Peace is available if not known

Love is offered, hatred unfurled

Our small piece of the world

The place we call home

Our hearts beat passionately

When we think of our yesterdays

Our memories continue relentlessly

Memories that we remember happily

In our small part of the world

We so lovingly call home

Life full of adventures

Passions gently instilling

Happiness is sincere

If we are truly willing

No matter where in the world

That we may travel and roam

There is one special spot

Our little piece of home

It is so very special

And it is certainly our lot

In the early morning’s haze

The sun peeks above the horizon

Announcing the beginning of another day

Our new day is just right to have begun

The robin is singing a delightful good morning

The blue jay standing at attention for the new day’s beginning

The flowers that closed their petals for the evening, now awaken

With a most amazing hello of open petals to display pure beauty

The chill of the night’s lonely air has been forsaken

A new beginning has arrived with glory and happiness, truly

A humming of bees finding their needed pollen

The whisper of a breeze singing a song of good morning

A yawn and a stretch from the family cat

One that is much more active than fat

The darkness of night has finally fallen

The dew on grass the morning warning

The world is smiling

Good morning

Hello

It is so nice to see you…
